Cabin on the Hill

The Studio

The studio is a large, private and comfortable space at the top of our long sloping garden. It is heated with a wood-burning stove or an electric radiator. There is a lovely view out over the Ashdown Forest. You will not be overlooked by neighbours.

In the cabin is a sofa, a desk, comfy armchair and an area for preparing simple meals.

Access is independent, along a path at the side of the house to the garden. There is a lavatory at the side of the house and a butler sink with cold water. Washing up with hot water may be done in the kitchen. The bathroom facilities (shower or bath) are in the house.

Traditionally a retreat is a place to spend time alone. Somewhere without distractions. Somewhere away from home, away from everyday pre-occupations. A safe place where you may withdraw and be solitary, give yourself time for contemplation and reflection. Spiritual retreats have always been part of the religious life.

What I am offering is such a place for writers or artists. In today’s ever increasingly busy world, it is hard to find time alone and particularly time without activity and demands. And time with silence.

We are, however, on the edge of a village. There are planes in the skies above; as there is anywhere else in the town or countryside. There are neighbours with mowers; the sound of machines may carry on the wind. But this is a perfect place for a short retreat away from your normal surroundings. And much of the time it is quiet.

The cabin is equipped with two electric rings to cook simple meals and a kettle.

Light lunch or supper can be provided (with notice). I can also arrange a hamper of local produce and dry essentials for your stay. See right for details.

Please speak to me to discuss these options and costs.

Muesli, porridge or cereal

Freshly baked rolls, bread or croissant

Eating out

There are restaurants and pubs in the village where you can eat reasonably, as well as take-away Indian, Chinese and fish and chips. There are other choices nearby.
